Brief History
The Department of English Language Education, established as one of the four humanities and social sciences departments in the College of Education in 1981, remains Korea University’s only education department for foreign language.
Our department developed to become one of the best education departments in Korea, where high-caliber students strive in their students with the hopes of leading the nation’s English education. In our program’s nascent stages, we recruited students based on colleges (equivalent to the current division system), receiving over 100 students per year till the mid-1980s. Due to system and policy changes, the number of incoming students per year has been fixed at 60 since 1996.
Graduates from our department play pivotal roles in various areas of our society such as schools, media and broadcasting companies, government institutions, and economic industry. Our alumni have demonstrated a particularly remarkable performance in the education sector, teaching students in secondary schools and colleges. We are now one of the top English education departments in the country, leading the English education in Korea. We aim to continue building on our achievements to become a world-class department in the near future.
